How does one get the delicious cake?
How does one get the delicious cake?

Ah, Portals. Makes sense, doesn’t it? I don’t think there is a gamer out there that doesn’t know of it. Valve’s puzzle game that was released as part of The Orange Box has become an instant classic with its fun and addictive gameplay. Valve has also just recently announced Portal: Still Alive, the obvious sequel to the first game. Let’s dive a bit deeper into the gameplay though. Read More »

The Mystery of the Boomerang Controller

3060000000053666The infamous boomerang controller was shown to the public by Sony when they announced the PS3. The controller has a shape as if some alien designed the controller; with long and narrow handles and oddly placed trigger buttons. When the public saw pictures of the controller, forums erupted with hatred towards the bold new design. No one knew how the controller felt in their hands, nor if it could possibly be the comfortable, easy to use controller ever designed. But it is hard to argue against the fact of how ugly the damn thing looks. But do any prototypes still exist?

But where is the alien shaped weapon at? There must be someone who works for Sony who has the boomerang sitting on their desk…or maybe it is shelf of their desk labeled  “Bad Ideas.” But now that the controller is pretty much forgotten about, I would like to pay my respects and give the controller a second chance. Probably the only reason I would ever use the thing is because no one else has one. But never the less, somewhere on this planet (probably in Japan) there has to be a prototype of this controller. But who…? And where…?

A mystery that may never be solved.

Our Folding@Home Team

While I am at it I’d like to thank everyone who contributes to this team effort by donating their unused processor cycles and as well as posting and helping out in this very thread.

The Folding@Home Website

The Folding@Home Website

So what’s the actual purpose of the Rikusaki folding team? Well it’s not about folding laundry Stanford University runs a distributed computing program called Folding@home and its goal is to understand protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases. That last part, related diseases is what this is really all about; it’s what nearly 2,000,000 processors are doing and that is helping to find cures to various forms of cancer.

How does the Rikusaki Folding team work? Basically you download a small program or client that once installed will utilize your processor’s ‘unused’ cycles to work on folding. Unused cycles? Simply put it is the portion of you processor that isn’t doing any work, so if it’s running at 80% while you game the other 20% goes to folding. It does this on the fly and will not interfere with your gaming or other computer usage. You can download clients that run either in the background or clients that run as screen savers.

What are the requirements to run it? Whatever processor you use needs to be able to complete the work units on time which can usually be done on a processor running at 1GHz or faster. You can download the client here: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download
